Rebecca Johnson is an Australian-born creative and educator. Identifying as an artist-musician-teacher, she categorically divides her energy between these disciplines.
Predominantly working as a painter and sculptor, her artworks are grounded in self-referentiality, examining the symbolic language of place, home and heritage. Her work interweaves the contrast of controlled hard-edged linear forms with loose gestural processes. The physical act of making embodies the human experience within the natural forces beyond our control.
More recently, Rebecca’s artwork reflects her family’s experiences of forcible displacement and transition between Ukraine and Australia post-war. The daughter of a refugee and war survivor, Rebecca’s art practice has provided a critical tool for processing the effects of intergenerational trauma.
Negotiated amidst family life, Rebecca shares her experiences and insights through art and music education. As a dedicated teacher, she has mentored many young people. During the 2021 Melbourne lockdown, Rebecca attained a Master of Arts Education from The University of Melbourne.
